BIBLIO-LABYRINTHES ARCANES

/ Indian ink & gouache on fine 320g watercolor paper /
/ 15 x 30 cm /
/ 7-10th August 2014 /

It is said that one should never interrogate the Tarot on its own nature, at risk of going mad. Too late, the project’s underway, and I realise that the goal is neither to produce an original work, nor to pay hommage to an artistic tradition, but the interrogation itself of the Arcana, one by one, as though they were looking into the infinite mirror of themselves. This narrative card-reading should not be in any way divinatory - I moderate that temptation with the quote : “superstition brings bad luck”.

The Sun - LE SOLEI-IL - the son - a most paternal card if not a patriarchial one. The eighth card selected “at random” in my narrative interrogation of the Tarot de Marseilles, and no. 19 of the Arcana Major.

It was mostly carried out during good holiday-time in a campsite at the foot of the Canigou, sacred mountain of Catalunya. Which works well, given the dominant red and gold colours of the sun and the wall.

Note : the stubborn refusal (once again) of the Sun and the protagonists to adhere to any kind of predictable symmetry. As I painstakingly copy even the “errors and anomalies”, I begin to glimpse a subtextual language in which each stroke and each empty space are invested with symbolic potential.

Erstwhile known as “LA CANICVLA” (heat-wave), the cross-eyed Sun recalls the the devilish sphinx atop the Wheel of Fortune. The relationship between the two figures is complex, but tender and human.

The next card is already underway. I can reveal, it’s not a numerological suite, but it certainly is a logical one, narratively speaking...

I must’ve been mad to start this trip !

WHO’S NEXT ?

http://benjosephgross.net

The original word Bateleur is medieval French, signifying a person who shows off his manual and verbal dexterity in market-places, a specialist in subtle and supple movements. Kind of like a modern day street-performer. Maybe this is how Bateleur became Magician, performing optical illusions and manual wizardry.

I picked the card (at random, as usual) after coming down off the Wheel, and back from the Star, around the 23rd July, but started and finished the card on the 29th-30th. Why the wait? After all, being one of my favourite cards, I had been impatient to pick it out. Imaginary hurdles and real-world obstacles delayed starting. Moreover, I was getting side-tracked, taking on other unnecessary work, deciding to record a song, thinking about other art projects.

Le Bateleur is a call-to-action, but also obliges decision-making and commitment to the choice taken. When I got round to starting it, I realised that the card and the project as a whole would only happen with that commitment. While everything is possible, it is not possible to do and be everything at once. With that realisation, and having post-poned or cancelled the noise, all the tools became at my disposition, like the tools spread out before the character.

The Tarot being a mirror of sorts, I realised I was projecting the role of the artist on to Le Bateleur - he is also a crafts-man, an engineer, a stage compère, a distributor of tracts. He gambles with chance, or possibly fabricates chance itself. After the Roulette of the Wheel of Fortune, here we have the manipulator of dice. Now a third-way through this adventure, is it an accident that the numbers on each of the three faces of the dice add up to 7, when this is the seventh card I have selected ? And three times seven being 21 ...

WHO’S NEXT ?

My collaboratrice selected the card (at "random") from the remaining Arcana, immediately after I'd finished with Justice. Interesting, from many angles. This was completed more or less in one day-long session. Aesthetically speaking, it is one of the weirdest cards. The three characters might well have escaped from Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, along with the mechanism of the wheel which bears a disconcerting resemblance to a torture instrument. The cross-eyed sphinx is garnished with the rare violet color, signifying wisdom, but he/she is not the manipulator of the Wheel - that is the role of the spectator, the card-reader.

As with Justice, the deceptive asymmetry of the design surprised me - it seems to give the wheel a sense of momentum. Only the point where the handle-bar joins the wheel, adheres to the true geometrical centre of the card.

Faithful to the medieval Tarot de Marseille, I have reproduced the spelling - another anomaly which I believe is more than a simple mistake (we will examine this in more detail in later posts). The curious apostrophe L'A would make a verb out of a noun. U becomes latinized V (not the case in JUSTICE). And yes, it looks like the original authors realized they were running out of space with the last 3 letters of FORTVNE, and conjoin the letters. The words are separated by the punctuation mark • .

I worked on this throughout the course of saturday, my atelier / gallery was open to the public. I had, you guessed it, three visits. (That's a good day). The first was a recently-met friend, new in this village, finding his feet here. He often comes by to see the tarot-in-progress. The second (whom I'd never before met) was a totally far-out astronomer-mathematician-mystic-healer-blogger-expert-on-Bugarach and creator of the Quartz Polyhedral Dark Matter Worm-hole Detector. Wow. The third (again, never before met) was a gigantic gentleman, a Ukrainian post-impressionist painter who I learnt lives just round the corner. Curiouser and curiouser - three protagonists in the card, three interesting visitors.

Finally, (not that I know anything about numerology) the numbers which this project is generating are beginning to look interesting. A résumé :

Chronological card order

Number of the card

1

7

2

14

3

6

4

8

5

10

Now is it just me - or is there something binary going on here ?

I am about a quarter of a way through this project now, and well ahead of schedule. The next card will require some reflection before the execution. The Wheel of Fortune, appearing at this point in the journey, seems to be telling me that there is still a lot of road ahead, and the most unexpected characters may crop up along the way. It also remind me of the card which began this journey, The Chariot, and I am most reassured to be reminded that my chariot has a spare wheel at the ready ...

WHO'S NEXT ???

This is part of its perfection - its imperfection. At first one perceives symmetry, equilibrium ... but looking closer, everything is slightly off-set. In the Tarot, perfect symmetry would be a profanity. The color-symbolism complements this notion, particularly chez La Justice. The active parts of the composition are flesh-color, showing the humanity and fallibility of Justice. The scales are slightly off-balance - perhaps owing to the slight play of fingers in the figure's left hand.

This is the fourth card selected. As Jodorowsky points out, there are many "anomalies" in the Tarot de Marseille.

The card is in truth entitled "LAMOUREUX" without even an apostrophe after the L. The Lover. Who are the actors in this story? What is this intricate game of hands in the lower half of the card? Is Cupid well-intentioned? While painting these images as faithfully as possible, I can't say I'm finding the answers to these questions - but I am finding plenty more questions.

Whatever the case, with regards to this project, this card arrives after the mobilisation of The Chariot and the moderation of Temperance, perhaps bringing engagement and reminding me that these images exist thanks to Love itself, and should be reproduced with Love ....

Who's next ? ...

THE NEW STUDY TAROT DE MARSEILLE after CAMOIN & JODOROWSKY

Pick a Card... Project begins 8th July 2014. 12 weeks to reproduce the 22 Major Arcana of the Tarot de Marseille, no frills, no Chagallesque frolics. So that's 2 cards per week. Is it feasible? In contrast to my first "Tarot del Boig"(which took five years' intermittent work), this new set of Major Arcana will be structurally faithful to the ancient "Tarot de Marseille" (as reference I am using Camoin & Jodorowsky's edition). The details are so precise that I am learning more about the structural symbolism than by reading any book. It is an exercise in timelessness, an discipline of illustrational patience - and a total pleasure. I'll publish the images as they manifest themselves ...
